In the mid-1880’s, the area was also known as Valley Mills. This lower mill was also the site of a distillery (perhaps hard cider), built sometime between 1815 and 1823.

The distillery was built either by John and William Vanderbelt before 1819, or by Joseph King if after 1819. In the late 1800’s to early 1900’s, a farm implement dealership was opened near the lower mill in the old distillery structure by a family named Fox.

Ice was also harvested on the lower mill's millpond each winter and stored in an ice house. The mill and distillery were closed down probably in the 1930’s.
