Dell's Mill / Clark'sMill
From US 12 in Augusta, Wisconsin go north about 3.4 miles on Wi 27. Turn left on Ch V for o.1 miles to mill.
The 3.5 story frame mill (called 5 levels), was built in 1864 by a Mr. Wiebber of hand hewn timbers with wooden pegs joining the timbers together. The millwright was Mr. Gordon and the first miller was Dan Merriman.
Merriman also operated a boarding house that could house up to 25 farmers as they made the journey to the mill, and often stayed the night. Later the house was a dwelling for J. Frank Clark, who bought the mill in 1917 and whose family ran it from then until even today.
It operated continuously from 1864 through 1968, and sporatically since then, mostly for demonstration purposes. Since 1968, the mill has been a museum mill operated by owner Gustave Clark, a fourth generation of Clarks to own the mill.
The mill has always been water powered by the waters of Bridge Creek but not with the water wheel that is mounted on the outside. The power producer was changed to a turbine many years ago and the current wheel was added about 35 years ago as an attractive feature.
The main gear drive is still original with the hard maple teeth being replaced about every 8-10 years. The mill operates with over 3,000 ft. of belting and 175 pulleys and does include a roller mill.
The mill is located in an area of the Chippiwa Valley reminiscent of the sandstone bluffs along the Dells of the Wisconsin River near Wisconsin Dells, Wi.
