Paint stripped from the building at 111 W. Argonne Drive, near the Kirkwood train station, in 1987, revealed vintage commercial signs: Coulter Feed Co. with the Purina Checkerboard pattern and a Bull Durham Tobacco sign on the side.

The old mill building, purchased by architectural illustrator Bob Whitesitt in 1987, had various coats of signs painted over the Bull Durham sign, six to be exact.

The newer signs were painted in red and black enamel, which were removed with Prosilco. The older, under-layer signs were lead-based. Each layer had to be accessed as to whether to kept it or to remove another layer to reveal new signage.
