Shupe Mill / Pritts Feed Mill
This mill is located at 26 W. Main Street in the town of Mount Pleasant.
Isaac Shupe built a grist mill in Mount Pleasant on the corner of Main St. and Diamond St. That was operated by a treadmill. This mill was not real profitable.
In 1845 he entered into a contract with David Clair to build a mill and still house. The frame building was to be 90' X 50', and 4 stories high. Isaac and his son, Daniel operated the first steam powered flour and grist mill in Westmorland Co., Pa.
This mill, operated by Daniel after Isaac's death in 1847, later became the property of Isaac's grandson, Oliver P. Shupe, who converted it into a roller process flouring mill.
A receipt from a long time ago
In an 1867 atlas, Daniel was listed as a merchant distiller ad grain dealer, while Oliver Perry Shupe was listed as a distiller. In the early 1860's Daniel took on James R. Wade as a partner.
In 1878, Oliver purchased the steam powered mill from his father, Daniel and Mr. Wade. Oliver contracted George Washington Bollinger to convert the mill to the Hungarian roller process in 1880/1882.
William E. Pritts purchased the O. P. Shupe Flour Mill in 1940. In 1946 he discontinued the roller process and sold the equipment. The flour mill was replaced by a feed manufacturing and blending plant. Pritts also converted the steam power to electric motor power.
