Aylett's Mill
From Aylett on US 360, go south on Sh 600/West River Road about 1.3 miles to Mill Road/Sh 647 on the right. Turn left on a dirt road and the mill will be right ahead.
William Aylett's mill was burned by Union Forces in June of 1863.
JUNE 1863--Union gunboats traveled up the Mattaponi River and upon landing on the King William County shore, the troops marched to Aylett where they burned 16 to 18 houses, a machine shop, and William Aylett's mill and lumber houses. Houses on both banks are shelled as the boats traveled back down the river.
The current owner's family used to own many acres near the mill. He is now buying it back when it becomes available for the right price.
The mill was in disrepair when the owner bought it, having set idle for a number of years. He has turned it into a residential dwelling.
There are a number of cabins scattered along the river on the mill property, which the owner rents out to vacationers.
The owner, not an Aylett Family descendent, hopes to one day get enough time available to work on restoring the mill.
The stone foundation or lower level is surely part of the opriginal mill burned in 1863; the current mill being rebuilt on the old stone foundations. GPS: 37' 76.19N, 77' 09.28W
