Young's Mill / John Ritter Mill
Off Nill Road west of Coopersburg/Center Valley area. Owner requests exact directions not be included.
Young's Mill was built in 1839 presumably by Solomon Young, the only Young listed on an 1850 Census of millers and millwrights for Upper Saucon Township.
This is the mill after the first mill burned and was rebuilt by John Ritter. Date of fire is unknown, but this photo is of the late 1940's-early 1950's era.
Ritter operated the mill until about 1919/1920 when he sold it. The owner after John Ritter converted the mill into a pants factory during the depressionin in the late 1920's-early 1930's.
The mill was fed by the South Fork of Saucon Creek via a wooden flume, power being converted for mill use by an 18'X 5' wooden overshot waterwheel mounted into a massive stone forebay at the rear of the mill.
The stone section to the left on the photo towards the creek was the location of the waterwheel in the forebay. GPS: 40' 31.08N, 75' 23.66W 466' elevation measured in Degrees & Decimal Minutes.
The mill was sold again after the pants factory went out of business, and the mill was used as a facility in which to raise chickens by Fred Ritter (relative of John Ritter?). A Mr. Kohler converted the mill into a residential dwelling in the 1940's.
A comparison photo of the early 1950's photo above. At a time when no one was living in the mill/dwelling, a transient accidently caught the mill on fire and so it burned again in the 1950's-1960's.
The resulting rebuild left the mill without its 1.5 stories plus attic of frame. Even the frame part of the dwelling built over the wheel pit & forebay was burned. The 2 stories of stone was roofed over and remodeled into a 6 apartment complex.
The current owner uses the upper story for a photography studio while renting two apartments on the ground floor. The lower story is subjected to occcasional flood damage. The current owner should feel free to email additional info and corrections.
