Yeakle Mill
Take Sh 16 northwest from Mercersburg about 5 miles, turn left/south on Sh 456 and go about 9-10 miles. Turn left/east on Mill Drive for 0.3 miles to the mill on the left just before crossing the creek. The mill is situated back off the road on private property.
The mill was built in 1840-41 by John Myers, who died before the new mill opened. It is believed there may have been an earlier mill on this site or a site near by. Early records show a John Bragonier owning a couple mills in this area.
Shirk & Yeakle seemed to be partners in 1846 and Myers & Yeakle were running the merchant mill in 1860. Levi & Sarah Fritz traded the mill property to Abraham & Margaret Yeakle in 1874.
Abraham & Henry Yeakle operated the mill for many years. Mr. Russell and Reva Yeakle Fritz last operated the mill in 1955. Earnst Yeakle says the original French Burr stones were sold and the stones in the mill today came from the Bell Mill in Big Pool, Maryland.
