This mill was built in 1823 (check date stones on the mill), by Stephen Whipple, a blacksmith.
Whipple had previously gone into business with Silas Hawes to build "carpenter's squares."
When Whipple built his mill, he installed a trip hammer mill powered by a water wheel.

The mill rebuilt in 1924 by Ann K. Edwards.

Mr. George went on to found and become the first president of the ?Eagle Square Company? situated also in South Shaftsbury in 1864. This company began operation in new brick, stone, and frame structures on about 6 acres, and employing roughly 100 plus men.
