West Creek Mills / Noryton Cole's Mill
From Benton on Pa 487, go north about 1 mile to Pa 239/Beach Glen Road. Turn left and go about 2.3 miles on Beach Glen Road to the mill on the left, just past Coles Creek Mill Road. The address is 261 Beach Glen Rd.
The original mill was built by a man named Black c. 1800. It is unclear who the original owner was. Credit has been given to John Godhard, William Hess, and George Hess.
Other owners include Elijah Hess in 1820, Walter Hess, Samuel Hess, Alexander Colley in 1850, Jessie Heacock, Jacob Kimble, Ira Thomas and John Kimble, and eventually Norton B. Cole in 1892. He may have rebuilt the mill at thius time.
Cole was 21 at this time. He added modern equipment to the mill. The mill started out with a one run of buhr stones, a wooden overshot wheel measuring 12.5' in diameter and 8' face. The shafting, pulleys and gear wheels were all make of wood.
The wheel was replaced with a steel overshot wheel. Later a Fairbanks-Morse 42 hp. Kerosene engine was added to produce power when the water was low.
Cole's signature product was "Cole's Celebrated Fishing Creek Buckwheat Flour". The mill closed in 1960. The actual front of the road faces away from the road.
Some of the original equipment was retained, however modern grinders, bolters, and mixers were added. GPS: 76' 23.15W, 41' 13.28N
