Walnut Valley Grist Mill / Norris Levis Grist Mill
Take Md 273 east from Calvert about five miles and turn right onto Little Elk Creek Road. At the bridge on the left, keep right on Kirk Rd. and go up the hill, around the bend to the left and start down the hill, the mill will be on the left. It looks like a barn.
This four story, gambrel-roofed, gristmill is one of only a few gristmills still standing in Cecil County, Maryland.
Its survival is undoubtedly due to its stone construction and its continuous operation into the 3rd and 4th decade of the 20th century.
Robert Carter Sr., the builder, left his initials and the year,1847, on a datestone on the west wall between the 1st and 2nd windows of the 3rd story.
Carter sold the mill in 1851 to Robert M. Sherer of Chester Co., Pa., who sold it two years later to Norris Levis. Norris Levis' name appears on the Simon J. Martinet map, of 1858, of Fairhill District #4.
Levis operated it until his death in 1875, when his wife Eliza assumed control of the farm and mill. GPS: 75' 52.30W, 39' 41.11N
In the 20th century, the mill property was purchased by the Mackie/Mackey family, who ran the business until the 1950's.
