Just off US 202/Morristown Road opposite the Inn at Basking Ridge & Old Mill Inn Restaurant at N. Maple Ave.on the NE edge of Bernardsville near the Passiac River. Turn left at N. Maple Ave. onto Childs Rd. The mill & miller's house are on the right at the left hand corner.
The earlier Samuel Lewis wooden mill from 1768, was replaced by this massive stone mill in 1842-43.
The restored & renovated old mill is now the corporate headquarters for IEP Inovative Educational Programs, LLC. Learning Alliances, LLC.
The earlier wooden grist mill and barn were built along the Passiac River on land originally owned by William Penn. Lewis's grandson, Richard Southard aquired the lands, mill & barn (called The Grain House) in 1777. The mill became important in supplying Washington's troops, with food essentials including flour and meal, at the winter encampment at nearby Jockey Hollow the winter of 1779-80.
Continueing in the Lewis lineage, the mill was owned and operated by Samuel woodward from the late100's - the early 1800's. Woodward's, son-in-law, Ferdinand Van Dorn built the new stone mill in 1842.
Various owners came and went in the later part of the 19th century. By 1929 the mill with its interior overshot waterwheel was in disrepair, perhaps not even operating.
The mill and barn were purchased by William Childs in 1929, along with the miller's house, now known as the Childs House.
A segmented & banded French buhr millstone behind the mill. Very similar toi the segmented millstone from the second picture, simulating a millstone hoist used to lift millstones & move them to an area where the millwright can sharpen them.
The barn was moved meticulously across US 202 and became the Olde Mill Inn. It remains vertually the same as it was 200 years ago. Childs, along with his brother Samuel, went on to establish a cross-country chain of 107 restaurants. They were the first employers in the United States to employe waitresses.
Today's Olde Mill Inn is The Grain House Restaurant, a part of the Olde Mill Inn at Basking Ridge, a modern yet gracious inn for travelers and banquets, owned by The Bocina Group.
