Sugar Grove Mill
From Boone, take US 421/US 321 west about 5 miles until the two roads split. Continue on US 321 about 2 miles to the village of Sugar Grove. The first time you see the sign for Sugar Grove look for Old 421/Sh 1233. Turn right and go 0.8 miles to Dale Adams Road/Sh 1214 on the left. Turn left and the mill/home will be on the right just before the creek.
The mill was built in 1840, then converted over the the new roller system in the late 1800's to become the first roller mill to operate in Watauga County.
The above photo was taken from Sh 1242 from the bridge over Cove Creek.
The concrete wall is probably part of the old raceway into the mill.
An old metal gear from the mill.
Most probably an old stone bridge abuttment on the west side of Cove Creek from a previous road crossing Cove Creek on the north side of the mill.
The area around the community of Cove Creek was known as the Egypt of Watauga Co. The land was fertile, similar to the Nile River delta. Cove Creek also had one of the first cheese dairies in the south. The now private residence may have been a local store since ceasing to be a mill, considering all the soda-pop advertisement signs on the building. The mill last operated in the late 1960's.
