Stuart Snuff Mill
From Annaquatucket Road in North Kingston, R. I., go south on I-1 about 3.5 miles to Gilbert Stuart Road. Turn left and drive 1.5 miles to the Gilbert Stuart Museum on the left after crossing the Pettaquamscutt River. The address is 815 Gilbert Stuart Road., Saunderstown, RI 02874
The house was built in 1751. Mr. Stuart operated a snuff mill in the basement of the house with power from a water wheel.
The Stuarts operated the mill until 1761 when they moved to Newport.
In 1930, the house and mill was restored by Norman Isham.
The house served as a private residence and a tavern during the 18th Century, with the original snuff mill and water wheel being lost.
An English snuff mill from the early 1730's was transported to the mill and a new water wheel was attached to the side of the house.
In 2014 the site was, and is still, a beautiful museum along with the neighboring grist mill.
