Stuart Grist Mill
From Annaquatucket Road in North Kingston, R. I., go south on I-1 about 3.5 miles to Gilbert Stuart Road. Turn left and drive 1.5 miles to the Gilbert Stuart Museum on the left after crossing the Pettaquamscutt River. The address is 924 Gilbert Stuart Road, Saudertown, RI.
The original mill was built in 1757 and owned by Benjamin Hammond from from 1813-1867.
The mill was instrumental for the areas fame for "jonnycakes", produced by using the local farmer's whitecap flint corn and grinding it into corn meal.
Although fitted with a water wheel, the mill was inoperable for many years, until 2007, when the wheel was again connected to the mill gears.
The white oak waterwheel used to grind corn meal several times a week weighs 8,000 pounds.
