Stevens Feed Mill, Inc / Shirk's Mill
About 1.5 miles SW of Denver on 4th St., then becoming Lancaster Ave., then S. LIne Road to Main Street/Stevens Road intersection in Stevens, Pa. Turn left on Stevens Road and the mill is on the left by the Conrail track and Vertex Mechanical Inc. beyond the tracks.
The current 40'X 75'brick mill of 3.5 stories was built in 1907, according to the date stone, by Michael E. Shirk. More information is needed on the early milling history.
The mill, still in operation as Steven Feed Mill, Inc., was built with a two foot section of reinforced brick about every 12' vertically along the end walls and side walls. A bulk feed truck is idling under the mill shed.
The date stone reads that the mill was built in 1907 by M.E. Shirk. The mill, in great shape for so large a structure, sits on a stone foundation at 28 Stevens Road.
This building to the east of the mill and across the Conrail RR tracks was once used as a warehouse for Shirk's Mill and later Stevens Feed MIll, Inc. About the same size brick building as the mill, the warehouse is one story taller. It was converted to house the Vertex Mechanical, Inc. business in 2001.
Vertex Mechanical, Inc. is located at 21 Stevens Rd, formed as a result of a merger between Ray Youndt & Son, a heating & air conditioning firm, and Robert Martin Electric. The new concern handles residential and commercial air conditioning, electric services and technological support. They do this by providing custom heating & plumbing, duct work, installing heat pumps and exchangers, installing radiantfloor heat, and provideing maintenance program capabilities to their customers.
