Social Island Mill ruins
From Chambersburg, go south on US 11 about 3 miles to Social Island Road, turn right and go 1.6 miles to the mill ruins on the right before the creek.
The mill was powered by water and used for making flour and meals from grain and grinding and mixing grains for animals. Around the year 1900 the mill was owned and operated by J. H. Baker and known as Baker's Mill.
Later it was sold to Elam Shoemaker. He sold it to C. Brockley. In 1921, Brockley sold it to Harvey V. Etter, who owned it until 193,2 when he sold it to his nephew, Braine S. Etter.
Blaine Etter expanded the service to include a general store, a saw mill and in 1936, he added a cider press. In 1947, Etter sold everything to John L. Deatrick. He continued to run the store until selling it to Margaret Duncan in 1980. She sold the mill in 1981.
