Snyder's Mill
Travel 2.5 miles south of Mount Gretna on Pinch Road in Lebanon Co, Pa. Just after crossing the Lancaster Co. line by about 1/2 mile, turn right on Camp Road after going under I-76. Continue on Camp Road for 3 miles to the Little Chickies Creek. The remodeled mill is on the left just before the creek.
Photo from 1992 shows the mill in its unaltered state. In good condition, but vacant. One source proclaimed the mill to have been built in 1800 by Hans Herr, who perportedly built several other mills in Lancaster County in the same year.
!924 is the first year to really firmly entrench the mill as being owned by John Snyder in 1824 on the Little Chickies Creek. The mill may have been there earlier, as several mills in the area were taxed, but had not been identified as to which mills they were.
The mill was owned by Samuel Sherer in 1864, by J.C. Snyder in 1875, and by Christian Snyder in 1899. Some of these dates are similar to other mill descriptions as these were the years when particular surveys were done.
The mill was vacant in the fall of 1992 and by 1994, work was underway to convert the mill into a residence as the last three photos taken in the winter of 2004 can attest. Franklin's Lancaster County Atlas map # 2855--D7
