East of Sh 74 just prior to crossing Sherman Creek near Falling Springs Road at Bridgeport.
The log mill was believed to have had a wooden paddle wheel as the source of power. This type of wheel requires a stronger stream flow than a bucket type wheel thus indicating the power of Baker's Run as a mill generating stream.
The Perry County Book of Deeds records that Henry Keck purchased several plots of land for $4,000.00 for the purpose of obtaining water rights in 1860. It is believed that he built his mill in 1865-66 after obtaining the water rights.
Keck's Mill sold at Sheriff's sale in 1870 to a carpenter, Adam Wentzel, who wanted to try milling. He started with a chopping mill, a saw mill and a cider mill. Later Wentzel family operators were Henry, George A., and Miles Wentzel. The old picture from Miles Wentzel depicts the mill in the early 1900's.
The Wentzels used the most modern equipment of the day and in 1930, they bought the Newport Warehouse. Again in 1935, they purchased the nearby farm of Benjamin P. Hooke for storage facilities. At one time, they were operating 3 mills in the Newport area. The Red Mill/Pine Mill was razed in 1980, for whatever reason, and the stone corner of the mill left or fashioned for a monument to the old structure that served the local agricultural area for about 115 years.
