Continue right for another 0.75 miles after the junction with Ridge & Cedar Rds. The mill is on the left at the junction of Schoolhouse Rd. and Meadow Lane near Hoffer Creek.
Shiffer's Mill, a 2.5 story 32'X 50' red sandstone & frame structure of processing and extraction, was built in 1799. The grist mill used buhrstone and an overshot water wheel to perform it's grinding responsibilities.
The water wheel was removed (probably interior) in the 1940's and since then, all the machinery has been removed. A previous owner kept horses in the lower floor, barn type area and has been used mostly foe storage since closing in the 1920's.
The mill at 6383 Schoolhouse Road, Conewago Township, Dauphin County, was owned by Spooom member, Robert Carbaugh in 1994. He had done extensive restoration in the mid-late 1990's, but it seems to have fallen into a period of neglect as vines growing up and around the sides of the mill are evident. More info needed for this one.
Dense summer foliage obscures the normal winter view of the mill.
