Sheretz Grist & Saw Mill/Leppo Mill
Take Westminster Avenue/Road off of Frederick St./Sh 194 south out of Hanover, Pa. After crossing Fairview Drive, vear left on Impounding Dam Road. Continue to the mill on the left opposite the junction with Leppo Mill Road on the right.
The builder of the mill dating to 1770-1780 was Arnholtz Scherertz, who built the mill on part of a 530 acre parcel on the South Branch of the Conewago Creek in W. Manheim Twp, York Co.
Mr. Scherertz (also spelled Sharetz, Sherrod) was born in Germany in 1714 and immigrated to the U.S. with his family which included his wife Catharine and five sons in 1754.
Both mills drew their power supply from the water of the South Branch of the Conewago Creek, being fed by a hand dug millrace.
The non-operating mill looks well from the outside, but is in need of repairs on the interior. It is owned by D. K. Rutledge, an attorney from New York.
