In 1748 John Scarlet purchased 208 acres of land. After building a log cabin, which is the one standing today, he obtained a patent to build a corn mill.
He built a 4-story stone mill. The water wheel was located on the outside of the southern wall.
In addition to the grist mill, he also built a scythe mill near by. His son, William, operated the scythe mill.

The front and north of the mill as seen from near the bridge over the creek. As with many mills, Scarlet's mill housed the local Post Office on the ground floor. Mr. Schmale, who later purchased the mill property, converted the mill to turbine power.

In 1920, H. M. Willits, who purchased the property which stood vacant for many years, converted the mill into a beautiful home. In 2012 the mill is still a beautiful home. The owner of the home/mill trains dogs to herd animals.
