Savage Mill / C.E.Benfield Mill
Pa.152 going from Silverdale toward S. Perkasie about halfway between the junction with S. Perkasie Rd. and Main St. on the left. Just inside the Perkasie Boro.
Large 45x80 foot, brick 4 story mill in excellent condition. Operated as a feed mill into the 1970`s well after the addition of a bank of 4 tile, five story silos. Water powered from the inception in 1795 using an overshot wheel, the water supplied from Pleasant Creek. Some former owners were Savage and Hendrick. S. Perkasie was early on called Bridgetown.
The mill was originally built by Janes N. Savage. Claude Benfield acquired the mill in 1919, and by 1927, he had built an addition and another flour mill addition in 1930. The grain storage silos were added in 1945. In 1948, the mill changed it's operating name to C.E.Benfield. Later, the mill converted to steam power, then electricity. It had 4 roller mills to produce flour and a buhr stone to grind grists. Production was pegged at about 60 bbl./day. Continued to grind flour into the 1950's, then became primarily a feed mill. Converted in the early 1980`s into condos/apartments. See the website listed above for more info.
In August of 1991, in the process of filling a sinkhole in the parking lot at these Benfield Mill Condominiums, paving employees unearthed a mill race from the 1800's. Leroy Benfield , the former owner until 1978, stated that the race was operational before the 1860, when the mill became steam operated. The archway that was unearthed was the spill pool where water fell after powering the water wheel. Much of the tunnel/raceway passes under neighboring homes. The hole was subsequently charted , then filled back and paved over for the condos/apartment parking.
