The mill was constructed by millwright Theodore Farnum Elliott, who charged Edmund Sanborn $500 to construct the building and an additional $100 to build the ten-foot-high dam. The sawmill pond is largely a holding pond for logs; the main reservoir for water for both the sawmill and gristmill is Sanborn Pond, behind the gristmill.
The area outside the mill, where the sorted, sawn lumber/timbers are graded and stacked.
A view of the mill inside looking south. The sawn lumber is pulled from the carriage on the far end and placed on the skids to the right, where they can be sorted and bundled.
The view of the saw carriage looking north, towards the millpond. The continuous chain mechanism pulls the logs from the millpond up the ramp to the saw carriage.
The principle gearing, changing the direction of power 90 degrees, from the waterwheel to the shaft to power the saw blade.
Some stacks of cut lumber on the east side of the mill. The mill is about 21 feet wide and 76 feet long, with a turbine-powered circular saw on a 29-foot carriage. On the main floor is a planer, while on a lower level are a shingle machine and a second planer powered by separate shafting and belts. The original upright saw was replaced by a circular saw about 1870. Remnants of the original saw frame, from 1777, are thought to be stored or re-used in the building. The mill was built with up-and-down sawn and hand sawn timbers. Colin Cabot is the owner of both the sawmill and gristmill, and visitors are welcome.
