SITE-Knause/Grim's Grist Mill
About 2 miles north of Pa 562 from Boyertown on Pa 73. In the vicinity of Grims Mill Rd., Ironstone Dr. and Seneca Trail just off Pa 73.
Was an old grist mill alongside Pa 73 2 miles north of Boyertown. The 3.5 stories of stone construction were laid out approximately 40'x45'. William Hoch operated the mill from 1914-1915 and Adam Conrad from 1915-1937 when the mill was closed. The smokestack on the corner provided steam for the steam engine used to augment power when stream flows were low. The steam engine was replaced in turn with a gasoline engine--danger added to an already dangerous atmosphere. Photo by Samuel O. Miller.
Located near Gabelsville along Pa 73, west of Boyertown. The mill ruins were taken down in 1985.
This photograph from 1914 shows this once prominent mill in the hayday of it operation. The operator of the mill, William Hoch, stands in the second floor doorway. A year after the photo, Adam Conrad, standing on the left at the top door, bought the mill and operated it until it closed in 1937.
