About 2 miles east of the junction US 222 and US 322 east of Ephrata. At US 322 and Martindale Road, the NE corner of the intersection. GONE.
The first mill was log built by George Hinkle. The second mill was built by Jonathan Hinkle in 1797, a stone mill 4.5 stories X 50'X 70'. This would be much the size of the present mill, although records indicate a third mill built by either Hinkle, Bushong, Wentz, Shiner or Martin in 1830. The mill bore a sticking resemblence to the Zook's Mill, with it's cresent peak windows, in Upper Lampeter Twp. and built by John Bushong in 1857. The catshead is almost identical to the one on the Lower Cloister Mill in Ephrata Twp/Boro., with it's gingerbread.
The mill operation was accomplished by 3 turbines to power the sometimes flour, grist, and saw mill. There was no headrace to speak of and only a 50' tailrace. Production peaked at 50 barrels of flour a day.
Later owners were; Henry Shreiner in 1864, Weaver & Youndt in 1875, and C.E. Seldomridge in 1899. The last owner was Earl Sauder. Was in fair condition from 1969 thru 1990, and deteriorating from 1990 thru 2000?, when it was torn down to widen US 322 to enable a bridge replacement over the Conestoga River by the mill.
p.s.: The bad texture photo resulted from a extremely dark smaller photo being enlarged and lightened. The day got dark early due to forest fires in Virginia. The only photo available at this time. If there are better photos out there I would like to hear from you.
