According to Penn Twp. assessment lists, it is believed Philip Kryder (Kreider) may have originally owned the grist and saw mills.
In 1847, Kreider's heirs sold the property to Jacob Finkel. Simon G. Rote bought purchased the existing milling operation on Penns Creek, just west of Coburn, on Dec. 29, 1900 from W. H. Ertel.
Simon's sons, Thomas and Lester Rote, bought the property in 1934. Lester's wife owned and operated it into the 1960's.
The existing grist & saw mill, having already been in operation for more than fifty years, was kept in further operation by Rote's sons and his daughter-in-law until the 1960's, the last mills to operate in the area.
