Rose Mill / Pleasant Grove Mills ruins
This mill site & ruins is located at the intersection of Wagaman Road and Garis Shop Road, off Poffenberger Road just south of Funkstown and west of Alt. US 40/Old National Road.
According to a 1794 map of Washington Co., a grist mill was in operation on this site under the name of John Sharer. Later the property belonged to John S. Rowland, who transferred it to Benjamin Rowland in 1860. In 1869, Robert L. Rose was the owner.
It remained in the Rose family until 1891, when it was sold to Elias Emmert and later to Elvin H. Snyder in 1902. P. Lowell Fox purchased the property in 1947.
According to deed records for the 1800's, the complex consisted of a grist mill, a saw mill, chopping mill, and a dwelling house. The land grant fdor the property was called "Palmyra" and constituted 45.941 acres.
The three-arched stone bridge alongside of the mill ruins was built in 1839. The bridge was contructed with an outshot/widening on its NW wing wall to accomodate wagons loading and unloading at the front of the mill. GPS: 39° 35.32'N, 77° 42.41'W 440' elevation
