Rock Furnace Mill / Stoneroad's Mill
About 2 miles west of US 222 in Lancaster, after going west on W King St./Pa 462, then on Columbia Ave./ Pa 462, turn left on Stone Mill Road just west of Stone Mill Plaza, go 0.55 miles to the mill on the left at School House Road.
This 32'X 48', 2.5 story fieldstone mill was built in 1770 along the Little Conestoga Creek by Andreas(Andrew) & Veronica Kauffman primarily as a rifle factory. Fourteen years later it was converted to serve as a grist mill while owned by Christian Musselman. Jacob Kauffman had aquired the mill from 1780-88 prior to its conversion to a grist mill. Christian Musselman controlled the workings from 1789-1818, then Jacob Musselman for two years and Christian Musselman again from 1821 thru 1824.
Christian's son David guided the enterprise in 1833; John Lindner and Chris Hershey in 1834; John Schloft & John Bear in 1843; and in 1850, John Stoneroad was the owner/operator. A covered bridge beside the mill bore the name of Stoneroad's Covered Bridge(now gone due to Hurricane Agnes). Stone road owned the mill at least through 1899. A 6' headrace transferred water from the dam under the covered bridge to the mill turbine 2'lower as the 250' tailrace delivered the spent water back to the Little Conestoga Creek. The mill was used as a grist, flour, and corn meal mill with production averaging 10 barrels/day.
The mill was closed in the early to mid 1900's by Henry Stoneroad. The mill was used for storage in 1969; and by 1987, had been converted into a beautiful dwelling in a lovely setting.
