Rissinger's Mill
When traveling on Pa 25 west from Hegins towards the community of Sacramento, look for Fearmont Rd./Sr 4012 on the right at an intersection with a church on the right. Turn right onto Fearmont Rd. and go about 0.2 miles, then turn left onto a stone road, Mill Rd./T605/T446. Keeping right at the junction with T446, follow Mill Rd. about 1.4 miles from Fearmont Rd. to the mill on the right.
The owners think the first mill on this site was built in the mid 1800's. There was a fire in the early years and the mill was rebuilt.
An old rusted turbine laying in front of the mill, no doubt used in the early-late 20th century in the mill.
The twin outlet arches of the start of the tailrace, funneling the spent water under the road back to Deep Creek, a tributary of Pine Creek, only a little further downstream.
The Steiley's owned the mill in the early to mid. 1900's, then, the Rissinger family purchased the mill from the Steiley's in February, 1936. Notice the heavey pipe guardrail in the bottom right, ensuring traffic does not drive into the outlet arch pit of the tailrace.
The inlet for the headrace enters under the mill just in front of the left-most red shed, or about the rear left corner of the main mill structure.
The Rissingers operated the mill as a feed mill until 1968, when it ceased operations and was closed. In the early years the mill produced flour. In about 1938, it was determined that flour production was no longer profitable.
Mr. Rissinger, age 78, said there was also a saw mill on the property. They have no knowledge of a water wheel ever being used. When they took over, the mill was run by 2 turbines.
