Red Mill
West of the center of Bloomsburg 1.5 miles turn north on Red Mill Road and go about 0.5 miles to the mill.
A 3 story frame mill on a one story stone foundation with a 4th story clerestory that runs the full length of the mill. The mill measures about 40' wide by 70' long. The mill is in great condition, one of quite a few in the north-central part of Pennsylvania, especially Columbia County.
This mill was built in 1805 by Elisha Barton, a Virgina native. He installed a wheat stone set, chopper and plaster grinders, and did custom work for tthe local farmers for many years.
The water wheel measured approximately 10' wide and 100' in circumference. In March of 1813, the mill was sold to Lawrence Minegar who sold it to Peter Phillip Appleman and others in 1828.
Noah Crites and George Dreisbach II operated the mill under Minegar and Appleman's ownnerships. Isaiah WIlliam McKelvy owned the mill in 1882, installing the then modern, state-of-the-art roller milling machinery for flour production and also a steam boiler for times of low water flow.
