RUINS: Glenn Manor Mill
Located 4 miles east of the Susquehanna River at Columbia on Pa 462, turn right on Prospect Road, cross Locust Grove Road and the mill ruins are on the right just past the bridge over Strickler's Run.
The mill consists of dilapidated ruins of Glen Manor Mill, built in 1807 by Michael & Elizabeth Bachman(Backman). An earlier grist mill on the site was Shellenberger's Mill, built in 1750 by Ulrich Shellenberger. The mill passed to his son John who sold it and a 40 acre parcel to Christian Backman, Michael's father. The old mill was replaced with the then new 40'X 60' limestone mill, 3.5 stories in height.
The mill passed to Christian Herr sometime between 1833 & 1864, then passing on down to Christian's son, J. Hadley Herr in 1875. Dr. Napolian Wolf gave the mill in trust to his nieces & nephews in 1881 and in 1899, the mill was known as W. Vanham's Glenn Manor Mill. Operations ceased in 1905 and by 1992, the roof was gone, parts of the inner floors had broken down and the walls were deteriorating.
The flour, grist and sawmill was operated by an overshot wheel, powered by a 6' dam using a 50' headrace and a 100' tailrace. The mill was capable of producing 8 barrels of flour a day.
