Pottstown Roller Mills
Pa 100 from Chester Co., cross the Schuylkill River and turn right (East) onto W High St. Take another right onto S Hanover, then another right onto S. St., which becomes Race St. in a few blocks, and the mill property will be on the left.
The mill was built on site of Potts Grove Forge, which John Potts converted into the lower mill about 1764. Along with John Potts, the founder of Pottstown; John Penn and Samuel McCall were influencial in getting the enterprise started. The names Bertolet and Miller also figure somewhere in its history. Owned by Jesse Ives for a long time.
Sold in 1855 to Henry & Jacob H. Gabel, who rebuilt in 1856 and equipped it with state-of-the-art machinery. Production peaked at 100 barrels of flour/day. It was in continuous operation until 1972, when the 1972 flooding put an end to the milling.
Ten years later and in danger of being torn down, the mill became Pottstown's first restoration, having been converted into offices and apartments that enhance Pottstown's southern entryway.
The 1764 original structure is the stuccoed 3.5 story 45'x50' mill building with the three roof dormers on the left. The 4.5 story brick addition of 50'x25' with a cupola is probably from the rebuilding and expansion of 1856.
Rear of mill photo of the bar screen at the forebay to catch the big debris that was carried down the raceway. A daily chore for someone was to keep this bar screen clean. Pottstown Roller Mills, Inc is still doing business at another location, just east of the old mills at 625 Industrial Highway, Pottstown.
