Potter's Mill / Old Wortman Mill
On Hunterdon Co. 512 1/2 mile NW of Pottersville community in NE corner of Tewksbury Twp.
3.5 story frame mill constructed with a 2 story, large frame addition. Immaculate pvt. residence or apts. as of 1992. Front view along CR 512 with Black River/Lamington River to the right of roadway. Originally built in the 1750's by William Willet, the mill provided grain to Washington's Army during the Revolutionary War. Willet was bankrupted when the Continental currency was devalued close to the end of the war and sold the mill to Samuel Potter in 1782.
Rear view showing additions and cupola. The mill was also known as Wortman Mill. The Old Dutch Reformed Church is situated on the south side of the mill, further back in the trees.
Close-up of the front showing 4 doors, catshead(an extension of the roof from which a pulley system can be attached) for lifting sacks of corn, wheat, barley, oats, etc. from wagons or trucks as in later years.
