Philip Hoffman bought the mill from Updegraff in 1790. The mill went through four generations of Hoffman ownership, then Henry Kockenour, George Smyser, Samuel Lichtenberger and George Gross, 1869-1893. Gross replaced the old wooden waterwheel with a 36" turbine that produced 16 H.P., manufactured by S. Morgan Smith in 1877.

In 1893, Jacob B. Kunkel bought the mill from widow Gross for $7,000. Kunkel, who liked to buy at a bargain & sell at a profit, installed an additional 27" Reichard turbine and roller mills before selling in 1897 to John Meisenhelter for $9,000. Next George Jordan 1912-14, William Spangler 1914-15, and then J.Earl Frye. Frye used a 21" reconditioned New Success turbine to power the entire milling process inluding two runs of 5' burrstones, 4 roller mills, bolter, sifter, middlings mill, flour packers to produce one barrel (196 lbs.) of flour/hour. Most sold to local stores except during the great war, when all the flour produced went to France.

About 1922, Mr. Frye closed the mill, as the dust was adversely affecting his health. *Update: old Stone Mill, AKA - Frey's Mill. Built c.1783-90 by John Updegraff. Last operated by D.J. Earl Frye in 1922. It was converted to a hotel in 1925-26. In 2005 it may be an apartment building. It looks like someone is living here. Robert T. Kinsey 02/13/06*

*Update: I grew up by the mill. When we were kids in the mid 60's, dances were held downstairs. On more than one occasion, flood waters were up to the second floor. Greg Koch 09/23/07* Since then, it has been many things including an inn. It had been apartments in the 1980's but was run down and for sale in Nov. 1992. In 1994, it was reported to be a stable of some sort. Location: (ADC Map #14, D 7).
