Naylor's Mill/Spring Grove Mills/Wiley Mill
From the village of Detour, take Md 77/Rocky Ridge Road about 0.8 miles to Naylors Mill Road on the left. Turn onto Naylors Mill Road and drive to the mill on the right.
The earliest mention of a mill at this location was in 1773, owned by Colonial Miller Frederick Dern. In 1795, John Ross Key sold 207 acres of Terra Rubra to James and Richard Winchester. In 1803, the Winchesters conveyed part of Terra Rubra with a mill to Joshua Delaplaine. John and Frederick Delaplaine deeded a mill to John, Paul, and William Carmack in 1823, and they deeded it to Frederick Delaplaine in 1826.
The next year three partners, John Carmack, John McPherson, and William Miller acquired the property at a Sheriff's Sale. Paul Carmack and Robert Landers took the title in 1835.
In 1847 Daniel S. Hering bought the mill. Further owners were Augustus Herring and William Henry Herring in 1851; Philip W. Hahn in 1855; John Hess in 1860; Joel Myers in 1861 who made improvements to the mill.
The mill was rented by John S. Weybright in 1891. In June of 1893 Joel Myers advertised "Spring Grove Mills" flour for sale. In 1904, Herman R. Allender bought the mill for $2,205.
In 1907 George C. and Maud Naylor bought it for $3,500. In 1919, Floyd F. Wiley and wife Etta bought the Spring Grove Mill and operated it for 28 years.
Wiley sold the mill to Lester Hows in 1944. Cecil E. Priest owned the mill from 1946 until it was sold to the Cosdens, years later. Later owner Gerald R. Myers came in the progression somewhere. The mill was vacant in 1998 and in 2007.
