Naugle's Mill / Nawgel Mill
From I-76 /Pennsylvania Turnpike exit at Bedford and take US 220 south through the town of Bedford to Bedford Springs. The mill sits at the junction of US 220 and Sweet Root Rd., at the Bedford Springs Resort.
The first mill was built near the town of Bedford by an enterprising man named Federick Naugle about 1767.
Josiah Shoenfelt owned land on Shover's Run on which there were 3 springs, ( Bedford Springs ) in 1767. He conveyed this land to Federick Naugle in 1772.
It is believed Naugle built the mill c. 1797, and it is suspected that Naugle sold the land to Robert Spence for a debt incurred while building the mill.
A few months later Spence sold the property to Dr. John Anderson. Anderson was more interested in the mineral springs than the mill.
Anderson later became a banker and used the mill for a bank. The mill was also used as a clinic, and a store. Mineral water from a nearby spring was sold in the store. Today it is part of a collection of historic buildings inherent to the area.
