Milton Grove Mill
From Pa 230 in Elizabethtown, Pa. take E. High St. NE for about 2 miles. After the road becomes Elizabethtown Road, procede another 3 miles, turn right on Milton Grove Road, go 1.3 miles, make a left on Quarry Road and go about 1.4 miles to the mill down by the creek.
The 45'X 60' stone mill was buit in 1805 by John Pfoutz(Houtz). It appears he also built the Newtown Mill(Pa-36-31-01) the year earlier further downstream at the southern end of the township. When built, it was a merchant mill(one that took in grain, etc. and the same batch came back, processed minus the percentage, usually between 7 & 10%, kept as the fee for grinding) of the same footprint, but only 2 stories high.
Houtz continued in the operation of the mill until he sold it to John M. Keener about 1840. Joseph Keener was the owner in the later survey years of 1864, 1875, and 1899. The mill was still operating in the 1990's, particularly a large concern in 1999 when the photos were shot.
