McDowell Grist Mill / Edison Mill
Located just west of the Upper Oxford Twp./ Penn Twp. line on Sh 896/Newark Road between the creek and Grist Mill Lane at 107 Newark Road.
A 40'X 60' 3.5 story stone grist mill with frame upper gable ends. Update; Betsy Morris- 10/21/2019 - My family forbear James Mcdowell bought it; and, his son, John McDowell, and subsequent McDowells farmed that land and ran the mill until the 1930s.
The mill is being restored by the owners, Kate & Ned Kibler.
The datestone carries a T. M. R. on it. It would be nice to know what name these Initials represent. Update: 10/20/2019 - Betsy Morris - The Mcdowell Mill was built by Thomas Rustin who bought the land originally from Letitia Penn.
Photo taken late in the day in waning light, showing the opposite end of the mill. Update: Betsy Morris - 10/21/2019 - Buttonwoods was the name of the farm and house uphill. Supposedly there was a sycamore at the village green near the previous McDowell home and store a mile away at what later became Lincoln Station.
The mill has largely been restored. The structure seems sound and much equipment remains within the mill.
