Mark Flour Mill / Old Red Mill
The mill is located in the southeast corner of Licking Co. at the west end of the community of Brownsville on the north side of US 40.
The original mill was built by Daniel Griffith, a millwright, in 1839. Griffith owned a farm statrting about 1815,and the mill was the first in the township. The original mill burned and this replacement mill was moved from Frazeysburg in Muskingham Co., Ohio.
The Mark family operated the mill from 1911 thru 1946. Berry Run, behind the mill, was never used for water-power, but coal from a coal mine on the hill across the creek from the mill was a source of coal to provide steam. Millers were noted as always wearing white demonstrate cleanliness of processes and products.
The Old Red Mill is now an antiques & collectables store owned by Joe Brown since 1995. No milling equipment actually remains in the mill.
The mill is west of Oh 668 in Berry Run Valley. The mill was owned and operated by Berg Orr from 1946 to 1961, Mildred Sheetz in 1961, and Perly Smart in 1963.
