Maple Grove Mill / Mickey Mill
At town of Hereford, at the junction of Pa. 100 and Pa. 29, go north, left turn onto SRR 06119 if coming through Hereford from Bally. Go 6 mile on SRR 06119 to Main St. at Maple Grove. Jog left, take first driveway right just past right turn to Mountain Rd. A little stone smokehouse stands just to the left of the lane. The mill is back the lane to the right.
Nice 3.5 story grist mill with an internal waterwheel installed partially below the ground floor near the rear of the building. Built C. 1800-c. 1850 by John Kiefer. The 35'x45' stone/stucco mill has 4 doors to a gable catshead that is just off center to the right of the gable peak. Three stories are stone while the half story is frame constructed.
A mill pond and dam on the other side of Mtn. Rd. supplied water from Swabia Cr. and conveyed it under the road thru a penstock to the mill.
