Ludwig's Mill / Snyder's Mill
On Pa 61 southeast of Orwigsburg, go north of Deer Lake for about two miles, turn right on Pheasant Run Rd., then left on Grist Mill Rd. Go about a half mile to sharp left corner with the mill on the inside, uphill of the corner.
The first mill on this site, built of logs, was standing in 1800 and operated by Peter Ludwig.
A portion of the center of a grindstoneis for grinding grains for flour or meal, perhaps for this particular mill.
The present 40'X 50' 2.5 story building was built of fieldstone/sandstone in 1822.
The mill was last operated in 1913-1916 by Lewis Michael of Pottsville. It was purchased by another Pottsville resident Charles Snyder, a Pennsylvania state senator from 1908-1916, in 1922.
The old mill was acquired in 1932, was remodeled, and made into a home by William Quinlin. The dormer additions look to be of the 1990's or newer era.
