Martin Loy Sr., for whom the community was named, built the first mill at this site in 1808.

The original mill was torn down in 1836 and Martin Loy Jr. built the new mill in 1836-37.

Major Patton, Daniel Bare Sr., & William H. Aaron were some mill owners after the Loys. William Aaron bought the mill in 1865.

Some later owners included: Jacob Brown, Henry Brown, and Earl Brown; Earl being the last to use water to power the mill in 1945.

The mill closed in 1950, soon after the cessation of using water power at the mill. Thus ended the importance that Loy's mill played in this community built around the milling industry.
