Long's Mill-Groups Mill
The mill is located 1 mile NE of Newchester in Straban Twp. on Pa 394 at the Conewago Creek.
The 2.5 story brick mill enjoys a most beautiful setting on the banks of the Conewago Cr. Measuring about 44'X 48', the mill has been transformed into a striking residence. It must take the name of the road running alongside the creek over in the next township of Reading. The mill was built in 1809 and operated to the end of World War II.
There was a sawmill associated with this mill that was torn down by Jay Behre when the mill was being renovated for a dwelling. The sawmill was in such disrepair, that for safetys sake, it was pulled down literally with chain, cable, and a truck. The Society for the Preservation of Old Mills bought the old gearing of the sawmill, which was located in a concrete pit, for very little money.
Before the brick mill was built, there was a mill on the same site built of wood that is shown on a plot plan for the property dated 1797. This mill was removed when the brick mill was built. The taxes doubled between 1808 and 1809, so that also pinpoints when the mill was built. Also, the date is scratched onto a board on the projecting sack hoist.
The Long family owned the property on which the mill stands and also owned the property on the other side of the creek where Groups Mill Road goes, and owned all the property which is now New Chester, including the site where Mr. Bull had his grocery store. The Long family, who built the mill, kept slaves. Although the women had no recorded names, the male slave's name was Fortune.
