Long's Grist Mill / Nyce Mill
From Earlington on Allentown Road, take Morwood Rd. for 1.5 miles, passing Creamery Rd. and turning right onto Long's Mill Rd. Go about .3 mile to driveway to stone miller's house.
The 3.5 fieldstone/frame grist mill was built in 1848 by Jacob Landes on the E. Br. of the Perkiomen Cr. Subsequent owner/operators were Nyce, Koffel, Shelly, and Moyer. The last owner, Frank Long, ceased operations and closed the mill in 1930. *Update: I grew up across the Branch Creek from the Long's Mill you have pictured. Frank Long the operator of the mill by my farm had a son who moved to the Village of Bergey, about a mile downstream and opened a mill there, which didn't operate very long until it burned down in 1947. This portion of the headrace that brought the creek waters to the forebay and consequently to, first, the wooden wheel; and later, to the replacement turbine, has a plank walkway in place. The mill had been stuccoed at an early date for weathering purposes, although much has been 'weathered off' in recent years. *Update: Shafts, pulleys & clutches remain. Only grinding device in place is a Eureka Bark Mill, No.0. Structure used for storage. The mill is not plumbed or electrified. John Dunmire 1994*
The 40'x50' mill was in good condition on this 1983 visit. The mill and miller's house are on private property, so the owner's rights and wishes should be respected. In April 1983, Mr. Armann Lynn owned the mill and large fieldstone miller's house. His wife was gracious enough to grant a visit to the mill.
