Lepanto Woolen Mill
In New Hope, Pa. about 0.25 miles west of Pa 32 on Pa 179, angle right onto W.Ferry St. After about 250-300 feet, turn right onto Old Mill Road. Both the mill converted to apartments and the house/mill rebuilt on the foundations of the flax mill, the Lepanto Mills, are on the left.
This 60'X 70' 4.5 story stone woolen mill was built by William Maris in 1825. He also built the twin, companion flax mill(in ruins for many years, but rebuilt as a mill replica house since the year 2000) and the silk mill by the Heath Grist Mill ruins.
The silk mill is a controlled ruin; a residence has been built inside the ruins, incorporating some of the ruined walls. The flax mill processed flax and hemp until 1860, when it closed.
This mill was converted to apartments, while the other mill beside it was let to continue decaying. Perhaps the other mill had decomposed too much for a similar transformation. It was rebuilt after the turn of the century, 2000, on the old foundations as a residence resembling a typical Bucks County grist mill.
