It is not the traditional mill with water wheel used most often for grinding flour or powering a saw mill. The Old Mill Bloomery now serves as a concessions and restroom for various activities that are held on the grounds, not least of which is the annual Johnson County Old Time Fiddlers Convention, sometimes called the Laurel Bloomery Fiddlers Convention usually held about the end of August.

Old Bloomery Mill used an ancient process for forging iron ore into wrought iron. It has an underwater turbine that blows air from the atmosphere through a pipe into the furnace.

Some old parts of a turbine of the type used for blowing air to superheat the iron ore. The 14.9 acre Old Mill Music Park along Laurel Creek and the Gentry Branch of Laurel Creek is owned by the Old Mill Ministries, a non-denominational church organization, as a camping/conference center.

Part of the piping seem as it comes from the intake turbine, then into the mill/furnace. A large collection of anvils and tripp hammers are located in the structure.

Laurel Creek behind the bloomery provide for some of the fines trout fishing anywhere in the area, being stocked at various times by the Tennessee Deptment of Natural Resources.

One owner, Irvin J. Warden along with his son Arthur, generated the first electricity in Laurel Bloomery at their mill in the early 1920's. An old barn on the grounds is slated for or has already been renovated as dorm space with restroom facilities. Pea Vine Depot, on the grounds, also is either going to be or is already a dining facility and outdoor stage with light & sound for dramas and ministry events.
