Kuhn Mill / Big Spring Grist Mill
Located on Charles Mill Road in Big Spring, Md. From Williamsport, go northwest on Md 68 to Md 56. Go west on Md 56 and turn left on Charles Mill Road. The mill is on the left just after going through the RR underpass.
It is not known exactly when this mill was built. It is believed the mill was built in the late 1700's or early 1800's.
Jacob Kuhn was the owner and operator of the mill. He died in 1881 and his sons, Abraham, Joel, and John inherited the mill.
Abraham became the operator, using a laegr overshot waterwheel to provide the water-power. Notice the remodelled area in the center of the mill where two doors were removed when converted to a dwelling.
He began working in the mill at the age of 10, and continued until he died at the age of 73 in 1904.
Later owners of the mill, not necessarily in this order, include Guy Angle and Ben Charles; George Sword; Lloyd Bartles; Jack Cornwell; and Emory and Evelyn Metger.
The Charles family was the first to use the mill as a residence.
