Klingerstown Milling Co. / Samuel Rothermel's Mill
The mill is located on the west side of N. Main Street on the southwest edge of Klingerstown just before crossing Pine Creek.
The mill was built in 1808 by Daniel Herb. Herb may have built the mill for Johannes Klinger, who founded the town of Klingerstown. In the 1880's it was known as "Samuel Rothermel's Mill."
One report says the mill is built of logs. The ends of the logs are dovetailed at the corners to lock the building into a single unit to withstand the vibration of the milling process.
The mill had a double headrace from two dams on two creeks. The main source was Pine Creek. The Mahantango Creek was used for emergencies in times of drought. Both dams were destroyed in a 1936 flood.
A 1875 atlas shows the mill property owned by S. Klinger. In 1920 the mill was producing electricity for some families in Klingerstown. A man by the name of William Zerby was the miller in the 1920's. Ralph T. Romberger worked at the mill from 1929 to 1936. In 1930 a single cylinder diesel engine was installed.
