A view of the rear of the mill structure. The mill was built in 1813 by Joseph King on the Capoolong Creek as a flax mill and enlarged in 1827 to accomodate increased business. The mill used water power to operate a large trip hammer to squeeze the oil from the flax placed between presses of wood. The hammer was a heavy chunk of oak, walnut or other hardwood about 10' in length that was raised by the water-powered gearing then would drop with gravity onto the presses. New processes and the reduced use for linseed oil resulted in the mill closing. Linseed oil and "cakemeal" were the products of the mill.

*Update: Sad to say that the mill is no more. Having succumed to neglect, its owner unable or unwilling to lend a shingle or nail for nigh on to 35 years. John could not, at the point this picture was taken, have saved her had he tried. The mill it is told by the locals, had once supplied power to the homes of the village. Once as a young boy, I did see the old machinery and the power distribution board in the lower level; we having snuck in, fearful of discovery that the owner might do us harm. I'm told that the d-board had knife switches with hand written paper labels indicating which dwelling they controlled, but that was long ago. There was at one time a plaque above the main doors painted with the date 1775. Clint Newton 10/09/2007*
