A short distance upstream on Abrams Creek stood what was commonly called the Nathan Parkins Mill. Nathan was the youngest son of the Isaac who founded the Old Town Mill, the forerunner of Isaac Hollingsworth's Mill (featured also in Frederick Co.)
Nathan's home, was later occupied by Geo W Hillyard, is one of the oldest buildings to be found South of Winchester, certainly the old stone part. Mr Parkins was an honorable and upright man and attained an old age leaving two children surviving him January 5, 1830.
The Nathan Parkins Mill was destroyed by General Hunter during the Civil War, and was rebuilt by Jacob Keckley 1872-3, with a turbine wheel for power. This failed and the system changed to the latter style (unknown).See the website for Prosmart Systems, click on Facebook page and scroll almost to end to see photo of mill.
The 1 1/2 story frame mill was used as Hinshaw's Ice Cream Mill (an ice cream parlor), as late as 2005. Since then, the mill is a showroom for Prosmart Systems (a company dedicated to Home and commercial entertainment, security, and automation systems.GPS: 39D 9.87'N, 78D 10.04'W ele 676'/206 meters Winchester Quadrangle
